Sessional Parking Rate FAQs

December 18, 2023

Dear Members,

Many non-regular faculty members have reached out to me regarding what they perceive as unfair parking rates that are higher for sessionals than for Permanent Type B faculty. I have brought this issue to Labour and Management (LAM) meetings many times and I have received guidance from UFV on producing a FAQs Sheet to address members’ questions.

Please reach out if you have other questions or concerns you’d like me to bring to our LAM meetings or any other questions or concerns regarding parking.

In solidarity,

Toni Latour (she/her)

Your Non-regular FSA Rep

UFV Parking Rates and Payment Options - FAQs

Q: What are the options and rates for parking for employees?

Hourly: $2 for 1-2 hrs, $3 for 3-4 hrs, $4 for 5-6 hrs, $5 for 7-8 hrs

How to pay: This is paid for at the meter or paybyphone app. If you use this method, you will not be able to park in faculty parking or have in-and-out privileges.  Ancillary Services is working on changing this, but for now, the remedy is to buy a daily pass online. See directions below.

Daily: $5

How to pay: Log in to myUFV.ca, click on the three lines on the top of the screen, click on ‘iscover,’ type in 'parking', then select ‘Parking Monthly and Daily’.

This will allow you to park in faculty parking.

Monthly: $45

How to pay: Log in to myUFV.ca, click on the three lines on the top of the screen, click on ‘Discover,’ type in 'parking', then select ‘Parking Monthly and Daily’.

This will allow you to park in faculty parking.

Yearly (payroll deduction): $360

How to pay: 12 months of payments at $30 a month, paid for a full year. $15 is deducted from your pay every two weeks for a year. This payroll deduction option is only available to Type A and B permanent employees. This cannot be cancelled part way through the year.

This will allow you to park in faculty parking.

Yearly: $360

How to pay: An annual pass can be purchased by any employee (including sessionals and LTAs) from the parking help desk in the UFV bookstore. It can be purchased at any time.

This will allow you to park in faculty parking.

Q: Why is there a difference between monthly and yearly parking rates?

The reason that the yearly rate appears discounted is because it is based on teaching for two semesters, not three semesters. It is based on the idea that Type B faculty commonly only teach for two semesters a year. So it is calculated based on a monthly rate of $45 times 12 months, which equals $540 annually, minus four months (one semester of non-teaching) -$180, equalling $360.

Q: Who can choose which option?

Any employee can pay hourly, daily, monthly or annually. However, payroll deductions (including annual parking fees) are only possible for permanent employees. Any employee, including non-permanent employees, may buy an annual parking pass hrough the parking help desk in the bookstore. The annual parking pass cannot be cancelled part way through the year.

  1. Why does it appear that sessional faculty pay different parking rates than permanent Type B faculty?

Sessional faculty typically do not work on campus five days per week, nor are they expected to attend the same number of meetings as permanent faculty. For some sessionals, purchasing a yearly pass would be more expensive than daily or monthly passes. For other sessionals with high on-campus teaching loads, buying a yearly pass would make sense financially.

Q: How are parking fees set?

Parking rates for employees are set to ensure compliance with Canada Revenue Agency requirements on taxable benefits. To remain compliant, those rates must be set at the prevailing market rate. At UFV, the market rate is the student per-semester cost of $180, $60 per month, or $15 weekly.
